A DTF transfer only performs as well as it is pressed. These are the settings we use and test in our Athus workshop for Labo Ink transfers, and what to adjust depending on the garment.
The base settings
For Labo Ink transfers on cotton, polyester and cotton/poly blends:
- Temperature: 135 °C
- Time: 12 seconds
- Pressure: medium to high (4 to 5 bar)
- Pre-press: 3 seconds, to remove moisture and wrinkles
- Peel: hot, immediately after pressing
- Post-press: 3 seconds, for better washability and a softer feel
These settings are for our film and powder. Transfers from other suppliers may need different values.
Step by step
- Prepare the garment, then pre-press it for 3 seconds.
- Place the transfer, print side down, where you want it.
- Press at 135 °C for 12 seconds with medium to high pressure.
- Peel the film straight away, while it is still hot.
- Cover the print with parchment or a silicone sheet and post-press for 3 seconds.
What to adjust by fabric
Cotton. The easiest fabric for DTF. Use the base settings. Pre-pressing matters here, because cotton holds moisture.
Polyester and sportswear. Use the base settings, but always test first. Some dyed polyester can bleed into the print (dye migration). Use parchment or a silicone sheet for the post-press and avoid long second presses.
Cotton/poly blends. Use the base settings. Treat blends with a high polyester share like polyester and test one piece first.
Fleece, hoodies and softshell. Test first. Thick garments need a little more pressure, and a pressing pillow helps keep full contact around seams.
Tips from the workshop
- Store transfers flat and dry, away from heat.
- Avoid pressing directly over seams or zips. Use a pillow to raise the print area.
- On thick garments, increase the pressure slightly rather than the time.
- Always test speciality fabrics before a full run.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Film does not release | Low pressure, uneven platen, film cooled down, lint or dust | Increase pressure, use a flat plate or pillow, peel immediately, lint-roll the garment |
| Edges lifting | Low pressure or short press, seams creating gaps, damp garment | Add pressure, ensure full contact, pre-press and post-press 3 seconds |
| Small details not sticking | Lines under 0.3 mm, low pressure, rough fabric | Thicken lines to 0.3 mm or more, add pressure, post-press with a finishing sheet |
| Plate marks around the print | Hot platen on a sensitive fabric | Post-press with parchment or a silicone sheet, avoid long second presses |
Washing after pressing
Wash garments inside out at 40 °C and let them air dry. Our transfers are tested up to 60 °C. More in our wash and care tips.
